Co-operatives in the may be entering a new era at the start of the next decade in 2010. There are forces already at work that can bring co-operatives to a new level of development. But like any human and social endeavor, the character and shape of that development would depend on how the key stakeholders – co-operatives and government – would read, interpret and respond to the events that will impact on co-operatives. But, first, a brief analysis of historical development of co-operatives in the country.
International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) that represents the global co-operative community, since 1895, and presently consisting of more than 800 million individual members has issued an open letter to the Government of the G8 expressing the shock and serious concern on the Global Economic Crisis triggered by the melting down of some of the giant global financial structures.
The Cooperative Union of Cavite (CUC) is a secondary cooperative. It was founded in 1979 but it was dormant through the years until 8 March 1988 when the late BCOD Officer Mr. Antonio Ermeno called for a meeting of cooperative leaders in Bacoor and egged Dr. Oscar J. Tayko to infuse energy and inspiration to get the Cooperative Union of Cavite on the go. Since then, the CUC with its original 10-member coops started to actively conduct and promote activities for education, training and advocacy for cooperatives.
